Do you know who your Congressional Rep is? Do you communicate with them?

Asked by josie (30934points) July 9th, 2013

I had a big cook out over the Independence Day long weekend. A whole lot of my old friends showed up. They live in different parts of the US now. Eventually, the talk around the grill and the food was politics. My friends represent almost every political stripe you can imagine-from hard core right-wingers, to progressive liberals.

I love them all, and I share lots of history with every one of them. But having said it, I was surprised how few of them (and their wives in particular) actually knew anything about their district Rep.

But they had all the routine gripes and bitches about the government.

So, how can anybody bitch about the government, if they are not connected to it in the most basic way?

Do you know your Rep. Do you write to them? Do you tell them how you think they should vote. Do you reassure them that all politics is local and that they do not have to be more than a representative of their local constituents in spite of pressure to be “national”?

Not anymore. I moved 4 months ago and I have no idea who is my local representatives from mayor to congressman where I live now. In fact, I can only think of the name of one of the Senators for the state. I have kind of stopped watching politics for several months now. I will probably refocus on it next year. I did register to vote here though, so one thing I can check off.

Yes and yes. Living in a very small community, I am more active at the grass roots level and see the chairman and members of the town council at the post office and market. It I have a complaint, I just stop at the town hall in the center of our little hamlet (pop. 1600.)

Yes and yes, even better her office has called me before I called them a couple of times. I send my rep and my two senators quarterly report cards. The report cards deal with their voting record, their missing votes.

Yes, and rarely. I also know who my State Senator is, and recognized him while Christmas shopping at Target on Christmas Eve. That was fun!

Huh, that’s odd to me that people wouldn’t know their Rep’s name.

I email my Rep on important issues. He pretty much votes as I would like, but I make sure to send an atta boy and a thanks when it’s deserved. Because I suspect mostly they get negative feedback.

I’ve had three US Representatives most Americans have heard of:
Jerry Ford
Rod Blagojevich
Rahm Emanuel

Yes, and yes. I usually communicate with him via email, but have called his office on issues where I knew he was counting heads and I wanted to be on record when he shared with others in congress how many contacts he had gotten. He almost always votes just as I would want him to, so my communication isn’t to get him to do what I think is the right thing, but to give him ammunition to help bring other, more reluctant lawmakers into line.

He sends a weekly update telling what bills he considered, how he voted, and why. I very much appreciate his helping keep constituents informed.

Rep – Bill Flores. Sens – John Cornyn, Ted Cruz.

I live in Texas. I am not a Republican;therefore I have no representation in Congress.

I used to try but got tired of the condescending form letter responses from them. They just pat me on my little head, say “There, there” and assure me that, while I “may” have some valid points they know better and will vote diametrically opposite from what my desires are.

BTW:

Bill Flores appears on our local television station quite frequently (he was on this morning) but all he does is complain about those Incestuous, Devil Worshipping, Baby Eating Dems. that he is forced to deal with.

As far as I can tell, by his own admission, he has actually accomplished very little because of them. Of course, the fact that he is unwilling to compromise has nothing to do with his abysmal record.

I know y political representatives, and many of them know me by name. at least half could put my name with my face. I have been politically active over the past several cycles, and have worked closely with them, especially on the state level. I used to hear regularly from my US Representative, until I was redistricted out of his district. I’ve worked closely with my state senator since she first ran for state representative almost 15 years ago.
