Antibiotics causing swollen lymph nodes under jawline?

Asked by Burchy (9points) July 20th, 2013

Ok so my body is fighting off two infections: an abscessed tooth(front left) and two boils in a very personal area. Two nights ago I had a resting pulse of over 110 bpm and got scared and went to the ER. They gave me .5 xanex for my racing heart (doctor said it was anxiety), 2 antibiotics: clindamycim 300 and sulfamethoxaz-tmp ds 800–160 (which is generic for bactrim), and percocet 5 for pain. Long story short (too late, I know) I started my medication yesterday morning, this morning I woke up and my left lymph node under jawline is pretty swollen, is it just doing it’s job or should I be worried? Also the xanex doesn’t seem to be helping my racing heart feeling. Any ideas? Should I go back to the ER?

<—-is a dentist. All sounds normal for these meds however, IF you start to experience: Shortness of breath, HIVES, purple lesions, stop meds immediately and go to the nearest casualty department. When you have infections such as this, the lymph nodes are involved and you will notice swelling as the lymph nodes dispose and filter out diseased tissue and fluids, which is what is supposed to happen with antibiotics. Percocet is a pretty strong opiate. Could be why you feel a racing heart beat. Call the nurse before going back to casualty UNLESS have symptoms of allergy, described.

Thank you very much, I feel better just knowing a swollen lymph node is normal.

But the racing heart started before I took the percocet, its why I went to the er n that’s why the gave me xanex, but it doesn’t seem to be helping…

@Burchy racing heart, a common thing, when you go to your regular dr. have this looked at. There’s lots of treatments for it ranging to xanex and drugs like it to betablockers, or more organic things such as biofeedback. A racing heart feeling is not in itself dangerous or deadly. Good luck to you and let us know how you go.

The lymph node sounds completely normal since you have an infection in your mouth. The racing heart, well, 110 is very fast, is it still constantly that fast? Did it only start when you got sick? The antibiotics if they are the right ones and you take them correctly (make sure you follow whether you need to be empty stomach or take with food, etc. if it says three times a day that means every 8 hours, set an alarm, don’t just take it breakfast, lunch and dinner) you should feel better in 72 hours, even though it is crucial you cntinue taking the meds until they are finished. Fast heart rate is common with fever and illness, although, again 110 is very fast. When I am in the 80’s I feel like my heart is coming through my chest. Make sure you are well hydrated.

If the heart rate keeps up for days then return to your doctor so they can check your thyroid and some other things.

The antibiotics have to be in your system for at least 24 hours before they start to take effect, so the swollen lymph glands are from your body working overtime to fight the infection naturally.

With all that’s going on, it may be close to a week before you start feeling better, but even when that happens, continue taking the antibiotics as prescribed to ensure that all the bacteria are killed off.

Hey, GET THE HELL OUT OF YOUR HEAD!!!

You have anxiety, it’s normal it will pass. Stop focusing on the feeling. Take as many deep slow breathes as you want.

I suffered from anxiety too you just got to get out of your head. Your doctors will prescribe you this and that, but really it’s all in your mind. Try doing something productive. Go work out. Take a 3 mile walk. Take deep breathes it’s nothing.

Are you feeling any better today, @Burchy?

I am feeling much better! Thank you all! My swelling has gone down, boils are clearing up, anxiety is so-so. I am taking meds on time and drinking lots of water. I am a little worried that bactrim is giving me a weird nagging headache, it’s not sever and it’s usually only if I’m up walking around, but iburprofin isn’t helping…
