If interviewing for a contractor job, are you going up against others?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) August 29th, 2013

I have a question about how a staffing agency works with their client for filling a position.

I interviewed for an Administrative Assistant position with Aerotek, a staffing company. I got pretty far in the running but eventually got denied. Surprisingly, their recruiter submitted me for a position with Nationwide for an entry level HR position she thought I’d be great for. No interview required since I’ve interviewed with Aerotek already I guess. The position is a contract to hire and will begin within two weeks. So I took the required testing and did good.

Still no word. The recruiter told me that they really liked my background but are still waiting on the final word because one additional manager wasn’t present to go over it with them to make the decision.

My recruiter made it sound like I wasn’t going up against other people for this slot. So I’m curious, do you think I have a lot of people I’m going up against? I would love this job…it’s much more pay, closer to home, what I want to do and full time.

If Aerotek has the contract, they may or may not be offering other candidates. Be patient. It takes employers a while to decide.

You have the added stress of this being a holiday weekend coming up, so don’t expect a decision this week.
There are so many hoops companies have to jump through, so many people and departments that have to look at your application, that it could really take weeks to hire someone for the position, so try not to worry too much.

Oh, I’m not asking when a decision will be made. I’m wondering for contractor jobs, if you’re waiting on a position do you usually have other competitors? Basically asking are there other people I’m going up against for this?

It is likely the agency has other clients, and even more likely the company uses more than one agency. I would guess the answer is yes, you are in competition with others.

In the company that I used to work for, I often sat on interview panels, looking to hire both permanent employees and contractors. And, yes, you have competition. There were always others applying for the same job.

It is a staffing firm’s job to offer as many people as possible that match the minimum requirements for a job. They are working to create a pool of people that meet the client’s requirements so the client feels they had choice. So you are always up against others.

I’ve worked as a contractor several times, the position will sometimes be placed with a single agency like Aerotek. They (Aerotek) may interview more than person but Aerotek would be the sole agency.

Thanks! As you guys can tell I’m always anxious to hear back and “vent” here by asking questions. Thanks for putting up with me lol

I’ve applied to Aerotek for employment myself, but the jobs I was interested in I’d never get. I’m assuming that many skilled people turn to agencies like these in times of desperation, so you are likely competing with others. In fact the recruiter told me this himself when I questioned him about why I never heard nothing back concerning a technical position that I’d applied for.

Sometimes it’s actually easier to get in with a company through a temporary employment service than it is to compete for the same job by going through the client (company). Keep these points in mind.

That’s disappointing to hear. I really don’t want to be at this call center position at Safelite….right now I’m still looking for another job honestly. =[

^^ I’m currently looking for a job myself. My last employer hired me through a temp service, and then hired me full time when they liked my performance. The irony was the fact that I could never get hired directly through the employer themselves, so the temp idea worked for me.

The temporay employment agencies (Aerotek and others) that I’d signed up with usually asked me to write down my job preferences, and going by my skills, skill level and education they would match me up with jobs based upon those. Unfortunately due to competition and limited positions none of us are guarenteed to get the employment we desire.

I’ve been matched up with secondary jobs myself when the other positions fell through. In fact the jobs I’ve gotten over the past 5 years have little to do with my normal career field or education, so I’m struggling myself to find related work myself. You can try different temporary employment agencies, and even various online job boards/sites. Maybe your state has employment services which can help you land a better job too, and their services are free. I’ve been doing the latter thing, so hopefully this will work for me.

Good luck to you.

I don’t think the problem is me…I think there are too many people searching for jobs that even the over qualified experienced people are settling for a entry level job. In my call center training class a lot of older people with experience and degrees were laid off or couldn’t find better work so they settled for now.

The entry level job I applied to at Limited, my bf’s sister found out the woman that won the position had years of experience in HR. that being said, it leaves us college kids with little experience 0 fat chance

I’ll try the state employment services if there is any. Other agencies I applied with end up disappearing and not helping me.
