My personal favorite is Irv's burgers -- a little shack on Santa Monica just west of La Cienega. (www.irvsburgers.com). It's run by this great Korean family that learns your name if you go there, and gives you little personalized plates with a handwritten "just for you" next to a little drawing of what you're wearing. The burgers are very tasty, and quite cheap.

Father's Office is supposed to be the very best (though it's a madhouse there), and the Apple Pan is supposed to be very good as well, but I haven't had a chance to go to either of those places.

The best burger anywhere out west is In-n-Out.

"The Counter" in Santa Monica and "Outlaws" in Playa del Rey are two killer, killer burgers. Don't have the addresses handy but you can grab them in Google.

I agree on The Counter. It's on Ocean Park at 29th street. If you're willing to travel, Knowlwoods down in OC is great too.

I love Irv's, but the apple pan makes a great burger as well!

I've heard that you can order a burger at Mortons during the week at lunch time. It's supposed to be THE best. Other than that, the best burger I've had so far has been at 25 Degrees. It is connected to the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

Here is a good burger thread to read on chowhound: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/312209

Fatburger. Crappy neighborhood, great old-school (read:unhealthy) burgers.

The Counter or Apple Pan

My good friend and his wife would say Tommy’s. I say chronic indigestion.

I would add to this list, Father’s Office in Santa Monica.
