Why have my 3 mystery snails died in the past 2 days!

Asked by fishlover33 (25points) November 5th, 2013

I have a 55gal freshwater aquarium that has been set up for 6 months now. I have platys, guppies, a rainbow, 2 gouramis and a pleco. I also had 2 black mystery snails and a blue mystery. Two days ago one of the black snails died and now today the other two have died, what is going wrong with my tank? Am I doing something wrong? Three days ago one of my guppies had fry so I am assuming the water quality is good, especially as I have many live plants.

Have you tested your nitrites, nitrates and ammonia?

I have not done that yet but I am taking a water sample to Petco later today. I was told I shouldn’t worry about levels of that in my tank as long as I have a reasonable number of fish and plenty of live plants. The snails have been in the tank for Black snails have been in the tank for 5 months and the blue was in the tank for the full 6 months

I’ll send this question to our fish guy, @uberbatman. Maybe he can help.

Thank you! I am worried about the health of my fish and I would like to get another snail but I don’t want to do that until I know my tank is safe for another one.

That is by far the worst advice I have ever heard….

I would definitely get your water tested and if you want, post those results here because if you’re getting your water tested by the same people who told you not to worry about your levels I would NOT trust anything they tell you from this point on.

Now to solve the mystery of the mystery snail deaths….. Is your tank really clean? Like next to no algae on the glass? A lot of times snails will die not because the water levels get bad but because they run out of food and starve to death. If this is the case I would start supplementing the snails diet with some zucchini. Just cut a piece up for them and use one of those plant weights to keep it on the bottom of the tank. Zucchini is nice because it also has a good bit of calcium in it which will help the snails develop a stronger shell.

Sorry, I couldn’t really answer this question for you, but I had the same problem when I had snails. I’ve just completely stopped buying snails since they always die on me.
