Why does my ps3 freeze when I try updating it?

Asked by Mr_Grimm (412points) November 28th, 2013

Alright, so I took a 1 Terabyte Seagate Momentus-B external hard drive. It worked prior to me doing this, and decided to try and put it into my ps3 slim. I put it in, and it came up with a screen asking me to insert a storage device with the 4.5 update or later. I took a flash drive, and put the update on it, exactly how the playstation website told us to do so. I insterted the flash drive. A screen came up saying the hard drive needed to be set to the correct format. So I did, and it started to format the drive and the ps3 froze. So we took it out, and reinserted the original hard drive. It asked for the 4.5 update again, so we used the flash drive again. It started to update, and stopped at 99%. The ps3 doesn’t freeze, just the update. I’m stuck now. Do I need a new hard drive?

Ugh…that could be so many things. Unfortunately this is beyond my knowledge on the console. I own every PS ever made but I’ve never been good with their guts.

Try asking your question here if nobody on this site can help. I linked you to support/PS3. But I have to say, people on there are really slow to answer, and most of the experts they have barely answer anything but…worth a shot, good luck.
