nope, nothing here.

I got one. I changed it back to my original password. ADMINS?

gailcalled's avatar

Yes. Easy to change.

but i want to know where it came from, was it something administrative or the work of a prankster

gailcalled's avatar

It looked official and the links all led to familiar places. But who knows? If anyone wants to hack into my Q and A’s, good luck to them.

I got the email too. My first thought was “why would anyone want to hack into MY account?” but it’s probably fluther related if so many other people got it.

gailcalled's avatar

Perhaps it is designed to get the bad pennies, who show up constantly under different aliases – to find another hobby.

Once, when Andrew was looking into a problem in my account, he sent me an email telling me he had temporarily changed my password to my user name. Did you get a similar message? My best guess is that those who got it are probably part of the new “My Fluther” testing discussed in the latest podcast.

I got it too.

I got it also…..
And, uh, the e-mail in it links to the iphone version of fluther.

I got it and ignored it – still logged in under my old password. :/

@ PnT – once you log out (or are logged out), you will need the password they emailed you to log back in. i just changed the pw they gave me back to my old pw.

Update:
This was not a code issue, but a malicious user. We waited to chime in because we wanted to catch the user in the act (which we did!). Password resetting has been temporarily disabled while we make a more secure long-term fix.

gailcalled's avatar

Where is he/she? We’ll meet you w. the thumb screws. What makes some people so filled with malice?

delirium's avatar

Did it start with a Z?

jlm11f's avatar

just to be sure, for those of us that DID reset our passwords back to the original – did we do something wrong (in the sense does that user now have our passwords?). sorry if it’s a stupid question, i don’t know much about these things.

iwamoto's avatar

thanks ben, it’s as i suspected, that’s why i started the thread, like Del i have the same question…whas it a case of the Z ?

scamp's avatar

I think if anything like this should ever happen again, you should contact one of the owners/mods and confirm with them before doing anything. Good thing this thread is here, because now we know to be on the lookout. This is why I don’t have my e-mail address in the open for everyone to see. It looks like Z’s ‘favorite’ people are the ones who got the e-mail, doesn’t it?

ben's avatar

For the record, it wasn’t our friend, Z (though that was my first thought, too).

I’m keeping his/her name private, because I don’t think the attention will help.

Trustinglife's avatar

Ben, is it a regular Fluther user? If so, I’m not sure I understand your reasoning. Wouldn’t we want to know? Or is it the CIA…?

ben's avatar

It was a user who’s been banned from the site previously.

jlm11f's avatar

oooh i think i know who

wildflower's avatar

Hah! And I was feeling left out….now I don’t mind so much :)
And I’m guessing it’s not anyone I know since they didn’t think of me and I can’t think who it is if not the infamous “Z”.

scamp's avatar

@Trustinglife I don’t think Ben is going to post that out in the open. It would only serve to fuel the troll’s fire, know what I mean?
