Parents and Guardians: When is the first day of school for your kids, and did you finish your back-to-school shopping yet?

Asked by jca (36062points) August 28th, 2014

I came across this funny blog the other day about back to school shopping in the present era vs. the 1970’s.

I remember when I was little, it was a lunch box, some pencils and a sharpener, a ruler, glue, scissors and a pencil case. My bag was whatever I wanted it to be. Nothing was specific.

Now the rules are very specific and the list is very long. 3 boxes of tissues, wipes, and specific types of large quantities of everything else.

First day of school where I live is Thursday, 9/4.

Here’s the blog post – it’s funny and very accurate:

First day of school in my part of Atlanta was August 6 – my grandson has been in for almost a month already.

School started already where I live, and I was in the stores (like an idiot) the weekend before school started. I don’t have children, so no need to be around the crowds. I saw the moms holding the lists of what they need to buy and it looked ridiculously long to me. I just can’t believe how it is now. I can’t believe how early school starts in some parts of the country (although in FL it doesn’t really matter if you start in August, but if I lived more north it would piss me off unless my kids were on an all year round schedule). I can’t believe how specific the requirements are for what the students need to bring with them.

My two are back to school on Tuesday 2nd September. They both need new shoes for school and one needs new shirts. I already bought the younger one polo shirts. The rest of their uniform is OK. They bought new school bags while we were on holiday and pens, pencils, pencil cases etc. So not too much left to buy. I’m hoping I’ve left it so late it won’t be busy…
