Where can you find homemade/hand made ice cream in Portland OR?

Asked by KimberlyLD (285points) July 9th, 2008

Having moved two Portland two years ago, I’ve been unable to find homemade ice cream. Baskin Robbins, Cold Stone, and gelato, Portland does love gelato,Yes! But no old school, homemade, family ice cream joints. In the city, not out in the extreme suberbs. Help!

After living there for 20 years I honestly don’t think I ever found a place that did. Sorry.

I do know there is one in Vancouver WA that is supposed to be good. How willing are you to drive?

With the new ice cream makers, you can make your own – particularly wonderful now with all the fresh fruit. Peach ice cream, anyone?

I live in Portland, and just saw this review in the local weekly: http://www.portlandmercury.com/food/screaming_for_ice_cream/Content?oid=831818.

I haven’t been there yet, but it sounds interesting.

Try the Washington County Fair in Hillsboro. It’s a bit of a trek, but I used to go there when I was a kid and the Oregon Dairy Women’s stand behind the 4-H arena is amazing homemade icecream – or milkshakes, rather.
Other than that, I grew up there and I’m not sure I can give you any more hints. But go for the milkshakes at the fair, especially the blackberry. You won’t regret it.
