What, exactly, are Christian values?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46827points) February 20th, 2015

And if I am not a Christian does it automatically follow that I don’t have any of those values?

“I am a humanist, which means, in part, that I have tried to behave decently without expectations of rewards or punishments after I am dead.” ― Kurt Vonnegut

I’m in Vonneguts camp, absolutely. We do good deeds for the sake of the do gooding not for ego strokes.

And SO many Christians, I think, really believe that if we aren’t Christian, there is nothing to stop us from doing horrible things.

I just always thought to Golden Rule was a common sense thing. Like pulling your hand away from a fire. If you don’t get that there are probably external factors coming into play.

It may be a regional thing, @Dutchess_III. The Christians I knew in the Pacific Northwest, in Colorado, and here in the Northeast don’t assume that only Christians behave with decency and have consciences.
Maybe that’s a rural Kansas thing.

Marrying before sex.

Thing is, and I am not saying ALL Christians, but the overwhelming majority I have known are hypocrites to the 10th power. You can’t claim that “God” has a “plan” for everyone but then exclude terrorists, illegal aliens, welfare recipients and others that the hardcore, right wing, “Christians” seem to think should not even exist or should be bombed to hell and back. haha
Not to mention all the other things that they hold extreme opinions on forgetting that if everything is in “Gods” hands, well then…STFU, and let “God” handle it all. Maybe he wants illegal mexicans to cross the border and get health care, maybe he wants Ebola to spread, maybe that’s all part of his “plan.” LOL

It is always curious how god’s plan seems to always align with their views.

Yeah, I don’t understand how they can praise God because one child survived a flood, an ignore the fact that 500 other children died in it.

Christian values are simple. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

When people would use that Christian values line on me I would always reply I have Christian values too. To me, they are trying to say they value honesty, integrity, responsibility, and helping others.

talljasperman's avatar

If I did onto others as I would have them done to me I would be in jail.

Dutchess_III's avatar

The “helping others,” seems to be a real stumbling block for so many conservative “Christians.” Deny gay people. Shame poor people. Block non-Christians.

I am a Agnostic because I cant confirm nor disprove the existence of God. Jesus and the way that he lived his life and interacted with and treated other people should set a fine example of how everyone should interact with each other . Conservative Christians seem to ignore many of the teachings in the Bible and fail to emulate the kindness and compassion of Jesus. the bible says not to judge other people yet many Conservative Christians seem to be very judgemental .

unless you are an out-of-season fig tree.

kritiper's avatar

Keeping in mind that being a Christian is, by exact definition, a follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ. And that is all. You don’t have to believe that he ever lived.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I think he probably lived. Or that he was a conglomeration of many different people and their views of peace.
