Cant burn CD's or DVD's?

Asked by gilgamesh (227points) July 22nd, 2008

I have a T42 IBM think pad. It has a dvd and cd combo and the problem is i cant burn to any empty discs. The computer wont recgonize the disk as being empy at all. I am able to use music cd’s and dvds fine but i cant use empty ones or rewritable ones. I need to make a recovery disk for my other computer and boot it up, which is why I need this burner to work.

my first guess. it’s broken, check if you have warranty on it, there’s no quick fix for broken hardware

Are you sure it has a CD DVD burner combo, or CD DVD reader combo. Not all drives can burn discs, especially if it is a little older. A few years back the upgrade to a burner on a laptop was expensive and not worth it.

Have you ever been able to burn discs with it? What program are you trying to use? A little more info would be helpful.
