What is the update about the TV interviewer not hearing the name Scissorhand etc.

Asked by flo (13313points) October 5th, 2015

Wasn’t there anyone else esp. the producers paying attention?
Hedges, shrubs, Vincent Price, “Scissorhand’ times 2 or so”

Anyway is there any update on the story? Did anyone from the studio address it on the air, the next day or whenever

Yasmin Vossoughian is clearly no dummy and refused to acknowledge the shenanigans of this idiot Jon Hendren’s lame and epic fail at a gotcha moment. Good for her and get the Shepherds hook and yank his sorry lame ass off camera.

@Cruiser Really, no dummy? She didn’t appear to even notice that Hendren was talking about a fictional character at all. It’s also clear that the people who book the show are dummies. Hendren is a comedian – this is just the sort of thing he would do – and he has no special knowledge of Snowden that makes him an expert to be called on for commentary about him. Hendren doesn’t even know why he was asked to appear.

@dappled_leaves Exactly! That is the hallmark of a seasoned professional who knows how to handle douchebags when they break the plans for the interview set in place ahead of time. That is broadcast journalism 101!

@Cruiser So, it’s the responsibility of a seasoned, professional journalist who is faced with an interviewee who dodges the question and makes up fictional answers to simply ignore all that, play along, and never show that she sees through it? I don’t think so. A journalist should confronted a dishonest interviewee, always, and press for the truth. That is Journalism 101.

Come on. She clearly did not recognize that he wasn’t answering the questions seriously. She didn’t know enough about either Edward Snowden or Edward Scissorhands to recognize that. Why defend her?

@dappled_leaves I was in TV production for many years and know first hand the how and why of live programming and the last thing you want to do is deviate from the script of the segment as planned in advance. It was obvious from the first words out of the idiots mouth that he was breaking bad on the script and Yasmin knew it and knew it was now up to her to attempt to steer the out of control guest back on course. Her follow up questions were on point and showed she still had control over the direction that again was planned in advance. Twit wad kept at it and Yasmin knew she had a segment of time to fill and kept a firm grip on the direction of the segment. Unfortunately we did not get to see any aftermath footage of how they wrapped up the segment for you or I to really cast a verdict on how this was handled. Had this been a bigger network news outlet than the daily share than more criticism may be warranted but a show of this stature is tasked with the show must go on and again I say Yasmin did a quality job and her stock as a news interviewer just went up a lot.

@Cruiser Obviously, we disagree. If I were a fan of this program, I would stop watching after this interview, because it’s plainly worthless. If the host can’t deviate from a “script” as you call it in a live interview, what is even the point of the interview? Does nothing depend on the responses of the interviewee at all? Does the interviewer even need to be listening? Or can they just file their nails and play Candy Crush for the duration? What an incredible waste of the viewer’s time.

She is only focused in just asking the questions that she seems to have memorized no matter what answer he gave.

@dappled_leaves I have to admit I am wrong here and you are right. I found a longer video AND that the station producers screwed up and booked the wrong Jon Hendren and this whole thing was a cluster fk before it even got on the air. The comedian Jon Hendren obviously knew of their mistake and keenly answered a slew of questions quite intelligently and then later threw in the Ed Scissorhands comments not once but made sure she heard it loud and clear 3 times. The producers astonishingly let this continue and even more so the reporter should have said we will take a break and come right back.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@Cruiser Yes, I thought perhaps we’d seen different clips of the same interview. Good of you to come back to clarify.

@Cruiser, I agree with your latest post. Whoever made the booking must have messed up unless it was an intentional set-up to have her punked.

@flo, Watch the video again. Ms. Vossoughian refers to a small tablet on the counter between her hands. She seems to be clearly focused on working through the questions and not on what Jon Hendren is saying in response to them. There is a John (not Jon) Hendren that better fits the bill for this type of questioning.

This isn’t the first time Ms. Vossoughian made an error. In an other report, she called a mother and baby rhino giraffes, then later went on air to apologize for the brain burp. It seems as if she either needs to step up her game or find another career.

@Pied_Pfeffer The point is the same, i.e, she is not listening to what he is saying. I woudn’t be surprised if they interviewes make a habit of memorizing the questions just because glitches could occur with these devices.

So, my question is what is the update? did the station and or her address it?

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

@flo, I haven’t checked today. As of last night, there was no word from Ms. Vossoughian or news station HLN.
