What's a good dvd burner to get for a 3 year old Dell computer?

If you get an external, you can use it with other computers.

But internal is cheaper, and a newer computer will most likely have one bulit-in

That said, most new computers come with DVD burners.

There is little reason to base the choice of DVD burner on the age of your computer, as they continue to use the old unchanging IDE interface. Base it on your need for speed, quality, and desired wallet weight. I'd say Plextor and Samsung are great high-performance brands, and LG & LiteOn are respectable budget alternatives.
