It may be the same phrase: “Jeter le bébé avec l’eau du bain”, according to these knowledgeable people.

@Stinley , did you read the thread at wordreference? It’s certainly a literal translation, but doesn’t carry the same meaning / value as the English idiom.

@BellaB I read the thread and while there seemed to be some debate about how recently the expression has come into use, it does appear to be used and have the same connotation. It does sound like probably did come from the English at some point.

It sounds like even If your spouse (for eg) is doing you wrong you should love him/her?
