Did you know about the (brief) involvement of Portugal in the US Civil War?

I read somewhere that two Union Warships pursued a Confederate Blockade Runner into a harbor in Portugal. The Portuguese fort fired a few rounds of their canons at the vessels and they backed off out of range, to await the Confederate ships departure.

I have always been into historical trivia like that. The more obscure, the more I like it.

It’s an interesting note, but for historical accuracy, this question matters: Did they fire at the pursuing vessels, or were they just warning shots? The difference matters – and the ship commanders would have been very aware of that.

Also, which CSA ship was that? I’m guessing Alabama, but only because I know that ship played merry havoc with Union merchant and whaling ships in two oceans, and for a long time.

Believe they were warning shots, I’ll have to go back to the site and find the reference. My favorites thing is cluttered with historical and military history sites. Not sue of the Rebel ships name, don’t believe it was the Alabama though.
