How can I make my sore throat better?

Asked by Zachary_Mendes123 (1237points) September 30th, 2017

For about an hour my throat has been feeling sore and dry. I tried drinking water but that didn’t help. Any ideas?

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies I also just flagged you because your “answer” was not helpful at all.

So sorry you’re struggling with a sore throat. It’s a real misery when swallowing, something that we do frequently, makes you wince in pain.

I always reach for an over-the-counter analgesic; my preference is naproxen (Aleve). An analgesic will relieve the pain; it will also ease swelling and irritation, so it helps you stop the coughing and throat-clearing that prevent your throat from healing.

Please feel better soon.

I find a medicated cough drop like Hall’s or even regular hard candy does help.

Hot/warm tea with honey and lemon work.

Buy some chloreseptic spray. It works well to take the pain away temporarily.

Eat a popsicle. I do not recommend hot liquids. Heat inflames. Warm drinks are for congestion in my opinion, not sore throats, but that’s just my opinion.

Take two Tylenol.

Do you have a fever? If not, your sore throat will likely go away in 24 hours, and then you’ll be dealing with the congestion within 12 hours after the soreness goes away, and then you can have your chicken soup and warm teas.

If it’s sore 72 hours or more go get a throat culture for strep. If you have a fever above 101 go get a throat culture for strep.

@JLeslie I did have a low fever when I woke up this morning. I just remembered.

If it went away without any fever reducing meds I wouldn’t worry about it. Are you over the age of 16?

Plus, since you seem to be able to easily drink water, I’m
betting it’s just a cold.

That ” thing” in my profile picture is my sack person from LittleBigPlanet3. its a game. My name is Zachary. You can just call me Zac or Zach or Zack. It really doesn’t matter. I’m almost 19 and I’m in my second year of college. I really think that I’m a dummy from time to time.

Is 18 years old.

Ok, it’s just odd for adults to get a fever with a cold, but young kids it’s fairly common. Anything under 100 I wouldn’t consider a fever though.

Strep usually has a high fever, and it must be treated with antibiotics. A cold obviously you don’t need to take anything, but I think a little medicine go relieve symptoms is worthwhile. Just my opinion.

I wonder if the sore throat has started to go away?

Zachary_Mendes123's avatar

@JLeslie My sore throat hasn’t gone away. It hurts when I swallow. 2 years ago I had a sore throat that didn’t go away for a month. That was like hell. Now I’m just scared that it’s a repeat.

janbb's avatar

Might be strep. If it is, you need to see a doctor for antibiotics.

Zachary_Mendes123's avatar

@janbb great. More antibiotics.

janbb's avatar

Well, the doc will do a throat culture and if it’s not strep, you won’t get them. But strep is probably why you had it for a month last time.

JLeslie's avatar

A sore throat that doesn’t go away after 48 hours really should be tested. Strep is serious, and you’ll need to know.
