Is football fans climbing street-light poles a Philadelphia thing?

I’ve never heard of this before – Police in Philadelphia are greasing street-light poles link to prevent their fans from climbing them.

Is this some strange colonial ritual?

I believe so. I asked my husband and he said they are the worst fans in the NFL. I mentioned your question after he told me the streets in Philly will be crazy if they lose this game.
