Are ham hocks cooked in pinto beans any good?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46826points) February 10th, 2018

We got some ham hocks for the dogs at a meat market. We decided to cook one up for hamnbeans (or cornbreadnbeans, if you prefer.) Usually I use bacon. What can I expect? Better or worse than bacon?

Don’t know never tried them. I’d stick with bacon. Otherwise you can’t go far wrong with cornbread and beans.

Um yes…ham and beans is the best! A little cornbread and fried potatoes…mmmmm. I’ve never heard of bacon in beans except bbq beans. You get the marrow which thickens them.

It’s the boiling down that thickens it, @KNOWITALL, I’ve never used anything with bones on it before. It’s starting to shape up!

My family had ham for Sunday dinner about once a month, which ended up being three or four meals over the course of a week. The last one was the bone and the scraps left over to cook with pinto beans. Delicious. Served with home made cheese enchiladas and cole slaw.

It doesn’t answer your question but I thought ham was not good for dogs, too much salt and fat @Dutchess_III ?

They’re raw and unsalted and a little fat won’t hurt them. They’re not overweight.

Should be. No different than a ham bone cooked with beans…

We will find out!

Boiling them down for the 4th time. We’ll have them for dinner tonight. Man there is a lot of fat on those puppies! That will probably make them delish.

Well boney appetite as the Italians say. Don’t forget the corn bread.
