Asked by JLeslie (65433points) May 28th, 2018 from iPhone

The ones that can build a small house? I think the brand is Vulcan. I tried to google and couldn’t find it.

i don’t know cost but here’s the FAQ’s from ICON the company that make the machine. It sounds like they are making the Vulcan II then sending it to places like El Salvador or Mars.

Even if you could find a large 3-D printer, think of the materials cost. Filament is sold by the kilogram, for roughly $30/kg, depending on width and color.

I have no idea what amount of filament would be needed to build a house, but I think it would be far more expensive than wood.

I know it’s more than I can afford!!! In looking around, I found one that was the largest of the size that I could fit in my house & it costs $5,000. Of course, that’s just the beginning of the expense. The medium used to guild the house will be extremely expensive. As a matter of fact, it’s so expensive that you have to call for a quote!!!

IF you’re looking to build a guest house, you might want to check into the Tiny Homes that are the going craze right now. They can bring it up on the back of a truck & sit it right where you want it. All you need do is get it hooked up to the power & water. Not a lot of space but it will encourage guests to not hang around for long!!!

If this is just intellectual curiosity, then I have no idea. If you want to build one small house, wouldn’t renting one make more sense?

@chyna Lol. :)

@canidmajor Yes, mostly curiosity from a business perspective.

There is a NASA concept that uses directed energy (IR laser) to fuse Martian soil together to make building materials. This can also be used in the desert. Use the sun to charge the batteries and then fuse sand to make bricks. With enough time you can build a large structure from the earth.
