[NSFW] Is George Carlin's list (seven dirty words..) now completely obsolete?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33172points) June 1st, 2018

To review the seven dirty words, see this Wikipedia article

or you can listen to it on YouTube.

Now that Samantha Bee made the news with her “feckless cunt” broadcast the other night, it seems like just about all of the seven words have finally made it to broadcasting.

Has George Carlin finally been proved wrong?

It hasn’t made it to broadcasting; it has only made it to cable.

But anything goes on cable.

Dear old George was proved wrong not long after he announced them.Over the air TV didn’t allow any of those words; however, once cable became popular, they were heard daily even though OTA broadcasts couldn’t use those 7 plus a few more!!! Don’t know about the rest of the country, but “damn & hell” were banned on my local broadcasts as well. Actually, many of my friends watched cable simply to hear the “naughty” words which gave them some type of perverse pleasure. So, George was correct at the time of his recording; but as with life, shit changes!!!

Wrong? No. You missed the point of the list. Carlin stated that the whole purpose of language, was time convey thought. Removing a word from a sentence, did not remove it from translation through context. In other words, censorship was futile.

He was right.

Obsolete? Everything will be, eventually.

We are living in a society where people want to make referring to a woman as “she” unacceptable. Can using any of the big 7 really be any more unacceptable?
