Who says the following statement , regarding smoking and drinking?

Asked by flo (13313points) October 16th, 2019

Someone who says he’s a doctor was talking at a party to Bob and Sam.
To Bob the drinker, (who says he gets drunk every day, and is sufferring medical condition as a result), ’‘Help your brother Sam (who smokes 1 cigarettes per week if that), to stop smoking ASAP. ’’ but says nothing about Bob’s drinking. And Bob says ’‘What about me?’’ The doctor(or not doctor ) says ’‘You can try to reduce your drinking to 3 glasses of Vodka per day, smoking is what’s worse for health.’’

No one says it except, maybe, for you.

No doctor (or not doctor).

chyna's avatar

Is he a doctor (or not a doctor)?

flo's avatar

It sounds like someone who belongs in an institution, whatever he/she is.

@flo said it. No credible doctor has recommended cutting back to three drinks a day since the 1960s.

My radiologist said cut back on drinking before I started chemo and radiation. He said it would be best to stop completely but if that isn’t going to happen just cut back. He was way more concerned about smoking. (I did end up quitting smoking, still love a drink)

He wasn’t thrilled about either but he also seems to know just telling people to stop isn’t really going to do anything. Better to just nudge people in the right direction. He did say I could drink all the O’douls I wanted. For the most part I ended up doing that during treatment.

Pretty sure that would be Caravanfan.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

Wait. Is it a Doctor or a Decoy? They kind of have the same letters.

Caravanfan's avatar

Yeah…no.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

No? What exactly do you mean by that? Smoking 1 cigarette a day or 23 shots of Jim Beam a day? What do you mean????

JLeslie's avatar

Crazy talk.

One cigarette per week is probably like living in a major city daily dealing with the pollution from cars, and other pollutants, and walking to work. Your lung cilia have time to recover and move the tar and crap out of your lungs. It’s still poison, it still increases your risk of multiple cancers, don’t get me wrong, but it’s vastly different than even one cig a day. Every tine you have a cig your paralyzing your cleansing mechanism for several hours.

A lot of people, including probably doctors, think one drink a day is ok, but three I can’t see any doctor ok with that.

I’m thinking an alcoholic doctor might say it, but even that I really doubt.

I think that one is all yours.

Caravanfan's avatar

@Dutchess_lll I mean I’m not touching this one with a 10 foot pole.

flo's avatar

“The alcoholic is drinking _way more than 3 vodkas a day. The smoker is smoking 1 cigarette per week Both should stop but one way more urgently than the other.“_ The one who doesn’t belong in an institutionsaid that.

flo's avatar

@JLeslie “A lot of people, including probably doctors, think one drink a day is ok,...
“I’m thinking an alcoholic doctor might say it, ..”
“but even that I really doubt.” That’s why I mentioned _“belonging in an institution“_Go to the ones who say zero is the only amount, alcohol or cigarettes etc.

Also, to a lot of people 8 oz is too small to be called a glass.
What about the percentage of it. https://www.foodandwine.com/fwx/slideshow/12-worlds-strongest-liquors

@johnpowell But “stop drinking completely.” is the only thing for a doctor to say to a patient, even if patient is not going to undergo chemo. Added: Whatever the patient does is whatever the patient does and the doctor can’t be misquoted as it’s ok if you continue to drink

Re. “he also seems to know just telling people to stop isn’t really going to do anything.” How about “Don’t look at the sun directly.”? What if all doctors said “Just look at the sun directly no more than once /week, not everyday“_ because telling people what not to do won’t do anything kind of thinking.

Edited my last post, (the bold part).

@flo 8 oz is too small to be called a glass? Who says? A glass of wine is 5oz. It depends what you’re drinking: beer, wine, etc. Beer has less alcohol content and a glass is typically 12 oz. A pint would be 16oz obviously. Most women would be too intoxicated to drive after two glasses of wine or two cans of beer. My husband after 12 ounces of beer shouldn’t drive, if he drank a beer every day it would drive me crazy.

Caravanfan's avatar

It’s not about the number of ounces. It’s about the grams of alcohol consumed.

flo's avatar

@JLeslie My whole statement is ”Also, to a lot of people 8 oz is too small to be called a glass.” Me, to me I don’t know what is supposed to be the standard size, which is why I asked the question. So, to a lot of people is the key.

JLeslie's avatar

@flo I can’t imagine it’s 3 “glasses” of straight vodka a day. 3 shots? 3 vodka tonics? 3 vodka martinis? 3 screw drivers?

canidmajor's avatar

This is simply a fantasy conversation you’ve presented to us here, @flo. From this and other Qs you’ve asked I get the impression that you think smoking is infinitely worse than drinking. I really don’t know why, that’s your business, but the way you keep comparing them is silly. You are adding apples and sofas.

flo's avatar

@JLeslie but no doctor or a even lay person would say reduce your drinking to 3 glasses a day, or to 1 a day or etc. It’s such a crazy thing to say. same with if it were, “Reduce your 3 packs to 1 pack a day”. It’s jut stop. ASAP period. What the patient’s idea of ASAP is, is another story.
I mean people have a way of twisting things into whatver they want to hear. Some addicts patients might think/ and tell others “Drinking is not so harmful, my doctor said reduce, not “stop ASAP it’s a carcinogen…. .

I don’t believe my post says anything about straight vodka or not. I just quoted the person who belongs in an institution (so called doctor.)

Dutchess_lll's avatar

No. They suggest reducing @flo.

JLeslie's avatar

@flo maybe you didn’t get the entire conversation. Plenty of doctors give bad advice, so I am not defending the doctor. I don’t think it is odd for a doctor to suggest cutting back on drinking, but three glasses of whatever drink daily is still a lot in my opinion.

Caravanfan's avatar

@JLeslie is correct. Three glasses of any alcohol for anybody is still too much.

flo's avatar

…By the way it’s not clear if it’s someone who claims to be a doctor or a real doctor. Anyway as long as everyone sees that it’s scientifically wrong for anyone in health care to suggest to cut back, instead of stop. Cutting back to end up stopping can be what an addict decides to do if he/she wronglfully, believes that stopping cold turkey can’t be done.

flo's avatar

…Of course it is too much regardless if it’s straight Vodka or not.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

It’s only straight Tequila.
