Do you notice a difference between the best plasma televisions and the new OLED televisions?

Both anecdotal and technical opinions are welcome.
I am asking for a friend this time.

I have “old eyes”. I don’t pay extra to rent streaming HD because my eyes still see it in SD!!! I’ve decided that I’ve bought my LAST TV because I really don’t see that much difference. IF I could afford to get the eyes updated, it “might” be worth it, but for now…NOPE!!!

@LadyMarissa -My hub notices a big difference between the two and I don’t pay enough attention I guess.

@lucillelucillelucille Maybe your eyes are getting almost as old as mine!!! I paid $125 for my TV over 5 years ago & it still works GREAT for what I paid for it. Everything is still clear enough for me & the sound is still clear. I have NO desire to start over with a plasma & the additional cost!!!

@LadyMarissa—I do artwork for a living so you’d think I would notice. Lol
I will find out in January (eye appt) how bad or good my eyes are.
I told hub he can base his opinion on my opinion on the test results.:)

Gosh, plasma screens are way out of fashion over here, have been for over a decade or so.
We have a UHD tellybox & the difference is stark, not only with picture quality but also the sound.

I imagine the OLED models would only ramp that up further.
They can keep their curved screens though, not a fan!

@ucme – They’re still comparing OLEDs to the 2013 Panasonic plasmas. The plasmas used are selling for as much as $3000.
Apparently gamers and videophiles like them.

They tried plasma years ago here in the US but the price was so freakin high that they didn’t sell. That’s when they went with the cheaper version that would sell. Now it seems they are trying the plasma again. It will be interesting to see how well received they will be this time!!!

The last time they rolled out the plasma, they were $6K for a 30” TV. Guess they partially learned their lesson.

@LadyMarissa -I didn’t know they were making new ones. Do you have a link for that?

ucme's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille That’s fair enough I guess, not liking the price though!

Sorry @lucillelucillelucille, I had to run out for 2 doctors’ appointments. Hadn’t had anything to eat all day, so I had to stop to eat & I’m just now getting home. I don’t have a link because I’ve NOT been shopping for one. I volunteer my time working with ADHD children & I’ve been hearing them bragging that they’re getting a plasma for Christmas. It seems as though I’ve seen Black Friday ads for Best Buy & Walmart bragging about their plasma TVs being on sale. I haven’t paid attention to the prices, so you’re on your own checking on that!!! While out shopping this Friday, you might want to add Walmart & Best Buy to the stores you plan to visit.

@LadyMarissa -Thanks for the info. I thought they stopped making them!
