Does a human being eyeball a check when I deposit it using my cell phone?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33159points) November 2nd, 2020

Most of the time, I use by cell phone app to take pictures of the front and back of the check. During that process, the app figures out the dollar amount, the account number, and the routing number.

A minute after I hit <submit>, I get an acknowledgment from the bank. But the message says “we have tentatively approved…” and I’ll get an email when the credit is complete.

Does a human look at every check image, to decide if it’s legit?

It may depend on the size of your bank. I worked in Deposit Operations for a tiny bank – two branches – and we checked and approved or declined every mobile deposit. I now work for a bigger bank – 40 branches – and our Electronic Transactions department does this for every mobile deposit.

I cannot speak for larger banks.
