What should be done to limit the power and influence of Big Tech?

Asked by Demosthenes (14935points) April 28th, 2021

Big Tech meaning Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

If you don’t think tech companies have too much power, explain why.

They could (be persuaded to) install a member of a privacy watch dog organisation in the board (or any other organ where strategies and policies are made (not really my area of expertise).

Primarily keep a sharp eye on them as they certainly do on us. Then regulate them accordingly as surely as they plan to us.

If it is impossible to gain wealth and power then what is the insentive to try? A big demotivated wave of those who no longer try to be rich would sweep the land.

Start with nationalizing Amazon.

Seriously though – what can you do if the economic system is built on private, unaccountable power?

Nothing. There no sane reason to break up or punish some of the most creative and successful companies in American history because they were smart. That sort of thing – breaking up these companies – is being requested by companies (and countries) that are not as smart or as successful.

I do agree 100% that these companies need to be far more transparent about how they use our individual data, and should have no rights to share it without our approval.

But the privacy issue is far different from the size and influence issue.

They all have too much power. Consideration should be made of breaking them up.
