Did vertebrates commonly learn to use aural signals prior to adapting to life on land?

Are there many fish that send and receive audio signals?

I gotta think so. Sound travels much better through water than air, and light travels way worse through water. Hearing seems like the natural sense for water based species to develop first.

Don’t tap on the fishtank, they hate it, right?

They have to communicate at some level in order to procreate and continue the species.

So they must engage in aural sex.
