Are you watching "Rings Of Power"?

Asked by filmfann (52232points) September 3rd, 2022

I have seen the first two episodes.
Is it true to the Lord Of The Rings books (including The Hobbit and the other Tolkien works)?

Plan to start it but haven’t yet. I didn’t think it’s actually based on anything that Tolkien wrote but set thousands of years earlier.

No, I do not care about fantasy movies/TV shows. Have not watched the film’s, either, nor have I watched a single episode of Game of Thrones or its current prequel.

Would like to as its offered on youtube and Prime time.
But not sure if I would like to subscibe for 7 seasons ( although Amazon will only show 5 seasons).
Do not know what subscription rate for Prime time is online?
Still I could wait until its offered on DVD?
Apparently its based on notes Tolkien had written on another book as a backstory.

Oh man. I have the same questions as the OP! Lol

Seen the episodes and so far, still interested to see the next one. Trying not to overthink and be cynical. Not yet.

Been so long since I read the Silmarillion and I can’t recall anything specific enough to determine whether this Amazon series is true or not to the book.

I can only guess. There are probably some events and character relationships in these episodes that were just added. Like Jackson and his team creating Tauriel. Disappointed that they did this.

The first LOTR movie I watched, I was kinda mesmerized by it. But every other movie since seemed to be roughly the same thing, they were always fighting Orcs and wandering through the woods. They would throw in something a little different for a minute then go back to the same old plot with the same kind of battles scenes and stuff. I got bored with the whole thing pretty fast.

@mazingerz88
“Even though Tolkien’s original work is male-dominated as well, having female characters creates new dimensions, conflicts and complexity.

As shown through her relationships with Kili and Legolas, having a woman around creates a source of comedy, intrigue and story that simply couldn’t have existed before.

While Tauriel may be a new addition to the world of Middle-earth, her inclusion certainly didn’t hinder the success of The Hobbit movies—it may have actually contributed to it.”

It goes on to state that Tolkien’s original work was largely male -dominated, and by adding a

Love story it included female characters to possibly engage more female audiences to attend.

I understand that Jackson had to make action-adventure movies instead of fantasy-adventure movies which would have been more faithful to Tolkien’s work but certainly a lot riskier and most probably wouldn’t be as profitable or worse…could have been box-office failures.

I enjoyed The Hobbit and LOTR movies because I saw them as fair representations of the books I loved as a teenager. As much as I’d like to, I find I’m just not interested in a prequel to the events I’m already familiar with.

I loved the original LOTR trilogy, but I didn’t care for The Hobbit films, due to them stretching the source material to an absurd degree. I may watch this, even if it is not directly based on any book.

Not yet I’m not. I’m waiting for them to all be out. I’ll binge them then.

I can tell you, no, they’re NOT faithful because they CAN’T be faithful because there’s no other ACTUAL stories to tell. What they’re doing is producing stories from Tolkien’s background material. Tolkien’s greatest gift was world-building. The dude fleshed out EVERYTHING. So there’s a bunch of backstory he mentioned briefly in the Silmarillion or other works that can be expanded upon, but other than VERY high level outline type info, it all has to be invented by these writers.
