In the Trump classified info case, did they recover the videos Trump is alleged to have ordered deleted?

Asked by Entropy (4172points) August 30th, 2023

In the classified documents case, there was a superceding indictment that alleged that Trump had ordered employees to delete security footage that would be evidence of the crime after the DOJ had issued a subpoena for said footage.

I’d also heard that one of them caused a swimming pool to be drained into a server room where the footage would have been stored.

However, articles I’ve read never state whether the footage was actually destroyed or recovered. Water wouldn’t necessarily destroy magnetic media…and it’s unclear from what I’ve read if the water even REACHED the media. It’s only reported that it was attempted.

Has anyone read whether the footage was recovered/destroyed? Links appreciated.

YES. Jack Smith had an expert scan the drive & recover what they “thought” they had deleted. Nothing is ever deleted from your computer. That’s why the experts suggest that when you’re ready to toss your old computer that you take the hard drive to a shredding company & have it fully destroyed & then toss the rest. In this case, the employees were heard saying that they didn’t know how to do it & they were CORRECT!!! They did just enough to make the boss happy at the time.

@LadyMarissa – That’s what I thought would happen, I just can’t find a link to say it. All the stories just talk about the ATTEMPT to delete…which sounded very Marks Brothers-y.

@Entropy A friend of mine had told me about it & it’s his job to keep up with this kind of stuff. Still, when I got home, I did a search & found it. I did another search after I saw your comment & it seems to have POOFED. I do so much searching on this stuff that I can’t swear which site it was but I seem to remember it being FOX. Maybe that’s why it POOFED…they can’t decide which side of the fence they want to sit!!! I had meant to start a discussion on it but I didn’t have the desire to fight that day, so my search of my Q’s came up negative. I’ll keep looking & if I find it, I’ll be back with a link for you.

Water??? LOL

Most disks now are semiconductor anyway. So it is possible to destroy data with a process.

There are a few processes of wiping out data even on a magnetic disk that makes it impossible to recover data. It’s not water. A DOD compliant data erasure will overwrite the magnetic field enough times to not allow for recovery. A degaussing process also removes the data.

I have personally done data review on ferric oxide disks with an oscilloscope to review layers of data when I worked for the government years ago.
