Is marijuana illegal in Russia? How serious of an offense is it?

I should have been clearer. Griner was a political arrest for Putin’s own reasons.

I meant for the average Russian – are they at risk?

Less than 6grams and you get a fine and 15 days in prison or 480 hours of corrective labour. Over 6 and you’re sent to the gulag. They decriminalised it 2004 but reveresed in 2006 so I’d guess locals get treated the same way.

It’s exactly as illegal as it is in China. They’ll either ignore it, or sentence you to years of hard labor, depending on various political factors.
