How do you turn AVi files into mp4 files on the mac so i can put on my iphone?

i downloaded a movie from a bit torrent,but when i play the avi it just plays a weird choppy song,so im thinking it needs to be an mp4,help please

iPhones use the mp4 codec.

When using the above convertors, be sure to place the file within the specs that iPhones can handle (look under video).
