Robots as we know them were not so much invented as evolved. The first mechanized automatons were created by Heron of Alexandria in the first century A.D. Numerous mechanical figures resembling humans have been created over the ages; for example, in 1206 A.D., a Moorish inventor, Abu Al-Jazari, created a mechanical humanoid musician that was programmable using an array of pins and cams.

The first industrial robots were developed by teams of engineers working at Westinghouse Electric. However, robots did not come into widespread use in manufacturing until advances in computer technology in the 1970s made them practical and cost effective.

The most famous robot currently in existence is Honda Motor Corporation’s Asimo, a fully programmable and autonomous humanoid figure who often appears at trade shows. Asimo was first unveiled in 2000 and has undergone numerous design improvements since then. Although Onda denise it, it’s widely believed that Asimo’s name was chosen to honor legendary Science Fiction author Isaac Asimov, who first postulated the notion of the robot as a benevolent creature designed to serve humankind – rather than a dangerous appartition that would turn on its masters.

1921 – The term “robot” was first used in a play called “R.U.R.” or “Rossum’s Universal Robots” by the Czech writer Karel Capek. The plot was simple: man makes robot then robot kills man!

You probably have to be more specific with your question.
