What do you feel has been the best improvement you've made to the house or living space you presently inhabit?

Asked by jca (36062points) October 25th, 2008

what have you done to improve your present living space that you feel has been the best improvement yet?

in my house, the bedroom and living room had dark panelling, and a few years ago i painted the panelling a light color, which really brightened the rooms. it was a great improvement for not a lot of money.

Light maple solid-wood cabinets and a dappled apple-green back splash in kitchen.

In our previous home, we scraped the “cottage cheese” stuff off the ceilings and removed the dark paneling in the family room. The change was remarkable!

The walls in my bedroom are a beautiful, soothing light dark green. Which is to say, if you lightened a dark green with white, you know how it wouldn’t become the same as a typical light green? I’m not explaining it well, but it is extremely soothing. And probably the only big change I can make to my apartment.

I installed a chrome ceiling fan in the living area. Taa daa!

Andrew, that thing looks like it could hurt someone. Or like a boat propeller. Which could still hurt someone. Yet it is strangely attractive at the same time. (It looks very nice. I wouldn’t want to stand near it for fear of being sucked into it though.)

Yes, I enjoy enhancing my house with dangerous objects. Did I show you my fusion reactor?

Granite counters, wood floors. Also the chicken coop I built (when we had chickens, since dismantled).

A second bathroom. WORLD of a difference, my friends.

Second bathroom with cast-concrete tub/shower surround ($500) which I covered completely (it was grey) with specialty concrete 1/2” thick in a patchy, soft-edged
variety of pale off-reds and yellows, so that it looks like a wall in a southern town that’s
been exposed to decades of sun. Light comes into room from 4 directions, including
the skylight above the tub. In spite of our living in the far north, the amount of light sustains the impression that you just arrived in Mexico. Ah.

Took out the sliders and replaced them with French doors in the dining room and the master bed room.

Gutted our 1920s kitchen and started from scratch. The original built-in portion of the kitchen consisted of 2 upper cabinets and a sink on top of two lower cabinets, the end. 1970s stove and fridge were marooned with no counters whatsoever. We now have a fully functional, attractive (though not high-end) eat-in kitchen. Such a big difference in our day to day lives!

We ripped out the nasty, soiled carpet and put in teak wood floors. Pulled down all of the old-lady-busy-hideous wallpaper and painted. Repainted all of the primary colors (crayola green, dark fuchsia/pink) with soothing colors actually found in nature. Put in marble counter tops and replaced all of the linoleum with tile. Replaced the wire shelving units with cabinets. Added crown molding. Replaced the cheap, damaged aluminum blinds with plantation blinds.

Someday, when I can save enough money, I’ll redo the hall bathroom…..

i added on last year. made the kitchen bigger, tore down and rebuilt the garage, added a patio and large family room and bath. i love it…i’m in the new rooms more than any other. and the mannequins love it as well.
