Where to report a lost dog?

Asked by jsc3791 (1988points) November 7th, 2008

My family has recently found a stray dog. I took him to the vet’s office to see if he had a micro chip, and he does not. He is in good shape, has healthy teeth and gums, and is not neutered.

What is the best way to get the word out in the neighborhood that we have found him?

Are there websites for missing pets where I can upload some photos?

I don’t want to take him to the pound and am trying to do everything I can in case someone is missing him.

He knows basic commands and is calm and well behaved.

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

Maybe you could take a picture of him to the pound and post it on their bulletin board in case the owner goes there looking for him.

I would at least call the local animal shelters with a description of the dog and your contact info. That will probably be the first place the owners try when they start looking for him.

And you could always put up fliers around where you found him.

And thanks for taking such good care of the pup while you have him.

I think you can post pictures of lost dogs on petfinders.com which is primariliy an adoption site.

I would also call the local police station and see if anyone has reported a dog lost.

Also contact your local animal control officers. The owner’s may have contacted them to be on the look-out for the dog.

Contact:
Your local police station, humane society and put flyers up in the neighborhood and at local pet stores of the neighborhood you found him in.

He may have just wiggled out of his collar…poor fella! But if he wasn’t neutered an has no chip….well it’s a signal that he wasn’t owned but maybe just cared for by a local.

your local animal control dept. , some are part of your local police dept.

UPDATE: We posted a sign in the front yard alerting passers by that we had found a dog. Less than an hour later his owners walked by and saw the sign. He lived down the street and had gotten out a few days prior.

Thanks everyone for all of the great suggestions!!

That’s terrific. I’m a sucker for “found dog” stories.

Bring a flyer with pictures and info like nicknames you may call the dog, to animal hospitals around the area. If someone finds the dog they may bring them there. I work in an animal hospital and this has happened a few times. If the dog has a rabies tag and you know the # on the tag (which would be on a rabies certificate that you can obtain from the vet who gave your dog the vaccine) put that on the flyer as well. Also let the people at the front desk of the hospital, shelter, etc. know your situation and all about your pet and if they see or hear anything to let you know. This will make you an actual person and no just another poster on the wall of lost animals. Good luck!

@jsc3791 Aww, I love a happy ending! You’re a great person to be so kind to a lost dog. I bet the owners were very happy to get him back.
