Bless you?

Asked by clairedete (331points) November 8th, 2008

Do you appreciate when people say “bless you” after you sneeze? Do you say it to other people? Would you say it to someone you don’t know? Do you think this comes off as condescending? What do you think when people go all out with “God bless you?”

I think they’re being considerate and then it leaves my mind.

i have always said it. i think its polite,
even to ppl i dont know.

but i feel that people don’t say it as often.
ill sneeze in class and no one seems to notice.

i never know what to do with multiple sneezers tho…
do you continue to say bless you?
or will one acknowledgment suffice?

I usually give the multiple sneezers two bless yous and then tell them that’s all they get, lol.

It’s just a polite gesture. I appreciate when people say “bless you”. I don’t think it sounds condescending at all.
The “God bless you” I am not such a fan of, though.

It may seem considerate, but it’s unnecessary (obviously). “God bless you” is way too much- do we actually believe that our souls need blessing because of a biological reflex?

After multiple sneezes, I usually skip the bless you and ask, “Are you okay?” to show my concern.

I always say bless you. It’s just a habit and it’s a nice thing to do. I normally don’t go all out with the God part of it. My kids normally get annoyed because I make up stupid rhymes after I say bless you, stuff like, “Bless you monkey doodle do. Are you gonna be OK little sneezer pants badoodle bats?” You know, it’s just what I do and I have to stop myself from making up stupid rhymes when I’m blessing adults!

sometimes i say, “goose in tight”
it doesn’t get much response

i think the “bless you” thing when people sneeze is a polite gesture based on what is known to possibly happen to you when you sneeze. correct me if i’m wrong here guys, but sneezing is a major contraction of chest muscles and airways. could you die from a sneeze?

i think the God bless you is way in order. and since i have major sneeze attacks from allergies, sometimes i am hyperventilating trying to catch my breath. yeah, i want somebody to say “bless you.”

I always say “salud”.

I never say “God bless you.” as I feel I don’t have a right to it, being agnostic and I don’t know what they are. I do say “Bless you.” it’s polite.

I say it most of the time – but when someone hauls off with such a massive, loud, forceful one that I feel like I need a shower after, I won’t do it. There is just no reason to make such a spectacle as ACHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! when sneezing. So, they don’t get my ‘Bless yous’. However, since those attention grabbers are few and far between, I say it – even to people I don’t know in stores and such.

It’s nice when some one says bless you. It makes you feel like somebody cares.

I usually don’t hesitate to say it whether it is someone I know or a stranger for that matter. I’ve never received a negative response or reaction (that I can remember) from anyone when I’ve said ‘Bless You’ (I don’t say God Bless You ) and many people come right back with a ‘thank you’ on a lot of occasions.
