I can't hear my iChat sounds?

Asked by queenzboulevard (2551points) November 9th, 2008

Incoming message, outgoing message, buddy sign on, none of those work. Also in System Preferences/Sound when I click on a different alert sounds they don’t work. I just tried it again and the screen flashed (same as in Photobooth) each time I clicked the different alerts. Weird! Now it isn’t doing it anymore because I unchecked Play User Interface sounds. Now I checked it, and they still don’t work. In iChat when I select a sound to play, it works. But after I exit the preferences they don’t work anymore. Now that I think about it, my alerts haven’t been working for a while! I had Submarine set and it would always play when I deleted iTunes songs but it hasn’t been doing it for a while!

I had the exact same problem a long time ago. Twice actually, on two computers. I did everything I could think of to fix it, but never could. I just put up with it until Leopard came out and did a complete re-install…

Wish I could help…

I just installed some updates (though they didn’t have anything to do with this so I don’t know how that would have helped), and now the alerts are working. I also don’t think it was the restart because I have restarted many times and they still didn’t work. Now they do, so hopefully it lasts. I haven’t tried iChat yet but they probably work too.

I was having this problem, too…

just now, in fact

After I ran software update (involving a reboot), the sounds came back like magic…

Hey all. I recently stumbled across the solution to this problem. I thought I’d post it here for future reference.

Quit the ‘coreaudiod’ process in Activity Monitor and restart iChat.

I just tested it and this method works for me. I just wish I had know about this the first three time iChat failed me…
