An orange tree in my neighborhood and after we moved a magnolia tree. It was probably the most beautiful place I could have found at the time. Large shiny green leaves and white flowers bigger than my head, the scent was unbelievable. I was really little, and that tree was very large and thick for it’s species, we went together perfectly.

There was another tree in our front yard when I was seven or so that we drove railroad spikes into in strategic places, we could shimmy up and down it in about thirty seconds using them. For the life of me I can’t remember what kind of tree it was though. It had small tic tac sized leaves on each little twig(?) and black seed pods that look like castanets that rattled when they dried out and were perfect for throwing at your stupid brother or stupid sister’s face. Anyone know what that is?

Oh, and the roof of just about every house we’ve lived in. Two of them stand out, one was perfectly flat and you could just lay about for hours cloud watching or stargazing. The other had a flat portion and a skylight I could spy on my family from.

I was a bit adventurous…and stupid.

I used to hide in my closet. There were baskets of toys on the floor in the closet so I’d put a blanket over me and make my arms into a circle and pretend to be a basket. I was never found.
