Can Money Orders from Canada be encashed in Singapore?

Asked by The_Inquisitor (3163points) November 25th, 2008

I’m trying to buy something online from a lady for the first time. I wanted to send her either cash or a money order. I had already sent the money order but then in reply to my email, she had said that money orders aren’t able to be encashed if they’re from Canada or US.
Quoted—> “I’m afraid we’re unable to encash Canadian / US money orders over here, which is why money orders are not stated as a mode of payment in my shop”
She told me to send her the cash now, and then she will send back the thing i wanted to buy plus the money order i sent… What should i do? Ask her to send the money order back first before i send the cash??.... Are money orders from US and Canada really unable to encash?
(PS: i dont wanna use paypal or anything with a card, which is why my last resort is cash or money orders)

Make sure you stay far away from anyone trying to sell you stolen merchandise. It’s the not oft used scammer code of ethics. A good person wouldn’t be buying something stolen so it’s ethically ok for them to take your money.

If it’s a legitimate shop (like it sounds like it may be) what you might do in the future is buy those $50 (or more) visa gift cards and start a paypal account with those. Or you could even pay for the item with it (assuming they take credit cards). Just make sure you don’t get one for much more then the item is worth in case they (the shopkeeper) try to pull a fast one on you.

If the offer from the shop isn’t time sensitive, I would wait for them to send back the money order. You might be able to take your money order stub back to the issuing bank and get them to refund the money. Explain the situation to them. Hopefully, they’ll be reasonable.

I would never send cash overseas unless you expect to never see it or whatever you ordered. Not the sign of a good practice. I use PayPal and have it come out of my checking account. If you send cash you have no audit trail that the money was ever received.

I can’t pay by PayPal, i hear u need a parents approval, or… be 18+?.. I dont’ want my mom to know. I’m trying to buy something that can’t be bought where i live, for my older sister. It’s supposed to be a surprise.. :(
which is why I want to know if i’m being tricked, or if i’m too gullible
Cuz i also heard that Money orders are world wide… how can canadian money order not be able to be encashed in singapore..

Exactly, curiouscat. If she has a bank account, then she can deposit it. There’s more than enough financial relationships between Singapore and Canada.

I’d look for a different source for the product. Or, if the cost is not that high, and you don’t mind going into it knowing you could lose the money, then take the risk. Did you find the person through ebay? If so, you can read the customer feedback about the vendor.

One of the other questions offers an interesting option—purchase a prepaid visa or mastercard, and use that for the transaction. That way you can order online as if you were making a credit card purchase.
