Heating oil: how much in your area?

Asked by mcbealer (10229points) December 6th, 2008

I know a lot of people got bit because they bought oil on a contract at the summer prices. I filled my tank in October 2008 for what I thought would be a good price, $2.899. Frankly, I’m scared to see how much it’s dropped since then. How much are you paying?

My summer fill was at $3.74. This is the highest we have ever paid. Prices are theoretically lowest in the summer.

The contract price for a fee of $70 was $4.79. This means we would never pay more than this price…but if the price were lower at the time of a fill, we would get the lower price. We didn’t sign up for this price at this seemed too high….

I just called to see what the current price is: $2.17/gal

@ Snoopy maybe I will be brave and make a price check tomorrow :)

Please share what your price is…I am curious. I know some people are locked in to a price w/ a contract. As in, even if it drops, you still must pay the higher price.

Is that the case where you are…..?

@ Snoopy ~ After much procrastination I finally called today.
@2.3?9/g, I kind of blanked out after the first part from gratitude that my mistake ($97) by buying early wasn’t more costly. I’m down to 1/2 tank, need to figure out if I should buy now or wait. Tough one.

@mcbealer Well it is always a gamble. You were right to get a summer fill…as prices are theoretically always lower in the summer due to low demand. Many wait until they need it in the fall….due to money issues.

We can only do w/ the info we have at the time :)

@ Snoopy ~ yeah, a gamble indeed. Thing is, I didn’t fill up until October, and now we’re down to 1/2 tank, not sure if prices will continue to sink or if I should buy now.

@ Snoopy ~ I called today and made arrangements for another delivery, since I’m just below half a tank. Signed up for automatic delivery with no locked in price or contract. They simply bill you upon delivery. The going price in the area today was $2.299–2.499 after checking with several companies. I got $2.079 by going automatic. Very pleased and (sigh) relieved.

McBealer Whoa! That is GREAT!

We are on the autofill too…..Have been for years w/ the same company and have never been w/out oil. One less thing to have to think about :)
