Which caliber 1911 is more reliable, .45 ACP or 9mm?

Asked by ryanfaerman (109points) December 17th, 2008

I have heard rumors that the .45 is more reliable since the 1911 was originally designed for a .45 caliber round. Any truth to this?

Both are excellent but getting a 9mm 1911 would be like getting a Kalashnikov chambered for .223

Stupid question. A Colt model 1911 is a ACP45 caliber round. Thats it. If you have a 1911, you use .45’s period. A .45 will have considerable more stopping power then a 9mm round. Either one is easy to use. The .45 rounds are more expensive and you better not ‘limp wrist’ the gun when you fire it. It will jam. Then you will have to have the round removed by hand. If your first shot didn’t quite do the job, or you missed and it jams, you may be hosed.

There is a large variety of 1911 style handguns. In my opinion it boils down to which brand of pistol it is. I can tell you from experience I’ve had more 45’s jam on me than 9 millimeters though.

First off, I do not know of a Colt 1911 chambered for 9mm, but maybe I’m just slow. As far as the rounds themselves, depends of the application. If you want an almost certain one shot kill (or at least disable) go with the .45. If that is a little too much for you too handle, try a variation of the 9mm that has more punch and is still easy to maintain; 357 sig, 38 super, even a .40 cal is better than a 9mm and is controllable by all but the most girlie of the human species.

Happy hunting…
