Which microblogging service to use?

Asked by binary (461points) December 20th, 2008

Which microblogging (think: Twitter) service do you use, and why? Is there any particular reason not to use Twitter, or what?

A must if you have a blog.
Twitter has gotten me two interviews and a great network of bloggers and artists related to my blog.

I use Twitter. (same name as here in fact)
I like it because I can keep up with friends, product updates for things I have, and the news. I can also make my updates private for friends only…

Some people don’t like Twitter because it can get intrusive. (like, if you set up WAY too many SMS alerts so your phone is going off every 2 min.) or some may find that many updates are boring (yes, some of my friends post EVERYTHING that they do, no matter how mundane -snore)

But I think there are a lot of interesting people out there and Twitter is what you make it to be. I think it can be especially great for families, who could use it to check up on each other and see what’s going on in their lives.

Interesting answers, but I don’t completely understand the appeal of microblogging. By their nature, most blogs have a limited audience as it is. If someone had something interesting to say, it would be more than a sentence.

Unless some Zen master is Twittering cryptic koans from on high somewhere.

For me, micro-blogging may be a quick way to keep up on what my friends are doing, as it doesn’t allow for long intricate posts, so it forces the user to be concise in what they say.

But nobody I know uses any such service.

I use twitter, and I keep it as a record of nice moments from my life.

Facebook for friends.
Twitter for business.

I just signed up for Twitter for my company. We’re a 124 year old farm/food store with very loyal regulars.

I’m hoping to use it to keep them up to date on the day to day. Another way to have the customers included.

Ok, I know this is somewhat unrelated, but for some unexplained reason I really feel like typing this here:

I think it would be fucking hilarious if someone made a fully-functional Twitter-like service where users were limited to a five letter post limit.

For some reason, the thought of that just cracks me up. Fun times.

Identi.ca because its software is open source. In theory, I could host it myself and not depend on, say, Twitter to keep stuff online.

@Anaphase – watch out, I might just do that if you push me :P
