Do you use Mac Automator? What for?

Asked by tonedef (3935points) December 21st, 2008

I just discovered this application today, despite having mac 10.4+ for two years now. I was driven to it because I use both Songbird and iTunes (no link necessary). Songbird can download lots of cool new music from various online sources, but then iTunes doesn’t recognize it, and you have to manually add it, which is tricksy, and you have to stay on top of it.

Enter Automator! I created a workflow to add any files modified in the downloads folder since yesterday to a playlist (“Library”). It runs automatically at midnight daily, thanks to iCal. It’s a beautiful (albeit overly complex) thing, this Mac synergy.

Have you used Automator to solve any of your computing conundrums? Any cool workflows to pass on?

I read one of the books about it and it takes you through some sample workflows that could be useful in the future I guess. It sounded like it would be so helpful, which I’m sure it is, but it isn’t for me right now (because I don’t have any repetitive tasks that I do often). Sometimes I open it and drag ‘delete all iCal events’ and run that just to clean up my iCal. It really has the potential to be a sick app though.

I use it to batch rename files for web development.
