Does Second Life need more system requirements than the Sims game?

Asked by archaeopteryx (1004points) February 5th, 2009

I’m not sure about the quality of my Graphics card, but it was the same card that used to run The Sims 2 a couple of years ago when I was using Windows, and it wasn’t that bad at all. And I also have a 512kb connection (actually it never exceeds the download speed of 60kbs, but what can I say..??), and 512MBs of RAM.

(NOTE: I run a CrunchBang Linux now, and the Drivers for my Graphics Card are installed and working properly).

You can find system requirements on the official sites for both of the games, or easier, on Wikipedia. The Sims 2. Second Life.

If you know your computer ran The Sims 2, then chances are it can run Second Life. SL needs twice as much RAM, and 512 is the minimum. I recommend upgrading to 1GB or more if you can.

You’ll need to find out the model of your card. Second Life requires a certain range of graphic cards, whereas The Sims 2 does not. Again, the requirements are listed on the Wikipedia page.

As to your download/connection speed, this is very normal. A 512kb connection means both uploads and downloads. There may also be controls set by your ISP to limit your download speed. And then, there’s the issue that ISPs lie and sell you connection speeds that you simply cannot achieve.

That is so true, unfortunately.. =_=

Plus, yeah, I’ve been thinking of upgrading my RAMs for a long time, I think it’s time for me to do it.

Your connection is normal.

b = 1 bit = A one or a zero. This is the lowest you can go.
8 bits = 1Byte
1024 Bytes = 1 KB
1,024 KB = 1 MB

Basically, when they say 512 they are talking bits and not Bytes. So divide by 8 to know what your speed is in KB/s. That is what your browser will report its download speeds in.

I was thinking of purchasing some new RAMs… think I’ll stick with the sheeps.

RAM is plural by itself…)

On top of some more ram I would recomend just downloading the game and try to run it. There is a free account, and yet it might take a while to download you will save yourself the time latter. I will say that no matter what I do second life has always lagged. I have a really nice laptop with 4gig of ram, Nividia 8800GTS and a decent Intel processor. That is why I say to try it and see if it works.

@tehrani625

Yeah, I tried it, and it really, really, really sucks.. =_=

@archaeopteryx That would make sense that your now looking for a way to make it run faster. I have no idea what to do to make second life run better. I really don’t know anyone their anyways so its a waste of time for me. I have recently become addicted to halo 1 multiplayer on the pc.

@tehrani625

Halo1 = Microsoft = Garbage.. =_=

<Just kidding…!>

I am sorry that every now and then Microsoft manages to do something right. And I am addicted to running people over in that game. Its great for stress relief. Did I mention that it was free?

Halo1.. free?

The demo, yes. Its for mac and Windows (obviously).

Well, I’m not that much of a gamer anymore, lol. :)
These, Open Arena, Battle for Wesnoth and Kbreakrout are more than enough for me. :D
