Moms: Anyone know how to help soothe a tummy ache?

Asked by kelly8906 (340points) February 6th, 2009

My 3 year old has an awful tummy ache. I took her to the doc, but they said it’s just a stomach bug. Meanwhile, I feel so bad for her. Are there any foods or medicines I can give her to help?

Saltines. Or so I’ve been told.

Peppermint Tea,
Cinnamon Toast

Both peppermint and cinnamon are known for soothing tummys. Ginger is also, but most kids don’t like it much – except maybe Ginger Ale or Ginger Snaps.

my mom used to give me crackers (unsalted was her preference) and semi-flat to flat ginger ale. the ginger is good for the stomach, but the carbonation is bad.

Okay, thanks. She won’t sleep, it’s awful :( I’m going to try some of those. Thanks!

Ginger is definitely good for digestion and tummy upsets. In a lot of ports, you can even buy candied ginger to help with sea-sickness. Mom used to give us flat ginger ale and soda crackers when we were sick. I think the crackers helped neutralize some of the acid in our stomachs.

when I was little my mom would have my lay on my stomach, that seemed to help some in addition to the other stuff.

Liquid jello. Will knock a stomach virus dead in its tracks, and also help a queasy stomach. Good flavors are strawberry and raspberry, because they’re not too acidic in case at first it doesn’t stay down if you know what I mean.
Basically, you boil 1/2 the amount of water called for and then double the amount of cold water, and then slowly sip it. Serving size would be 6–8 oz, repeated until symptoms subside.
Another plus is it will help keep her hydrated. Hope she gets better soon :)

I’m sorry to hear that! If she’s still in pain (I hope she’s not!) you can give her some chamomile tea, or I know this may sound crazy rub her tummy with a little bit of olive oil…

The tummy rub is always good. Could use warm baby oil instead of olive oil.

Also old-fashioned hot water bottle wrapped in a towel. Heating pads are too dangerous for the little guys.

Moist heat helps. You can wet a face clothe and then put in the microwave for 30 seconds and place on tummy. Keep doing it when the clothe gets cold. It really helps.
