My son loves his. He is a musician and it holds a bunch od stuff. It’s well built and gets pretty good mileage.

I just bought one and I love it!! Solid car that will last, a lot of really great standard features, maintenance/oil changes covered during warranty, good resale, and really fun to drive (almost sports car like!). On the down side, 5 cylinder engine isn’t the best gas mileage in it’s class, not as long of a warranty compared to others and the 4-door costs $3000.00 more. I did a lot of research and it was the best choice for me. No regrets at all!

@Judi – Strangely enough, I’m a musician as well and though my guitar fits fine, our other guitar player’s case does not fit in the trunk, width-wise. But it is a surprisingly good size trunk, and can carry a lot with the rear seats down as well.

I had 3 Golfs: 1987, 1995, and 2000… all were 5 speed manual, and all went over 165,000 miles before having any problems. I traded in the 87 and 00 before they needed a new clutch, the 95 we replaced at 190,000; the engine died at about 225,000 miles (I had given it to my now ex-bf when I bought the 00, and he neglected it).

My most recent beau has the newest GTI 6-speed – it’s lots of fun to drive! The hatchbacks are so flexible and can hold tons of stuff with the seats down. Roof racks are available, too.
