When were metal snaps first used in dressmaking?

Asked by mac316 (590points) October 22nd, 2007

During a weekend historical re-enactment, a lady used metal snaps in her costume. Would this be accurate for a period, circa 1875?

I highly doubt it. I believe metal buttons may have been used during that period, but these would have been available only to the wealthy. I believe that snaps came into vogue no earlier than the 1920s. FYI – my credentials are minimal – I am merely an aficionado of fashion and historical costume.

The first use of snaps date back to the 1840’s.
