'Enter' key not working in the Finder to rename files?

Asked by benseven (3189points) March 11th, 2009

Never come across this before and a Google didn’t turn up much – we recently reinstalled the OS of a Mac Mini at the office, now using Leopard but the enter key no longer works to rename files in the Finder?

It could be to do with the KVM switch the chap uses, but wondered if anyone knew of a pref that could be switched on for this…

I am sure you did so no offense in asking this,

try going to keyboardmouse preferences and resetting the shortcuts. maybe there is a conflict.

That’s pretty weird in a new install of Leopard though – haven’t done that explicitly as a look through the list on my own machine didn’t turn up any pref that controlled the behaviour of ‘Enter’ in the Finder. Very odd!

Might get him to try that anyway.

At one point in the installation I think it asks you to choose the configuration. It shows you a diagram of where your enter and return keys are. He might try plugging in a different key board and seeing if that helps.

Which keyboard do you have?

And which key are you hitting? The “return” key or the “enter” key.

I know they are basically the same thing, but there might be a difference in the way the system maps keys. I know games are like that.
