Why in many apps to play multiplayer we need to be connected on the same network?

I love playing word games against other people, but I hate that we need to be connected on the same wireless network, that sucks!

The applications need a speedy method to communicate across devices, and a wireless network is generally the best way to do that.

Also, it’s likely that the games are sending out broadcast packets to find each other, and the packets aren’t routed past the local network segment. Other computers on the local network segment see them, but the router doesn’t pass them on.
