What do the red dots on Indian womens' forheads mean?

we are having a debate and we can’t seem to agree on an answer.

Bindi is a part of decoration which the Indian women wear on their foreheads. Generally, this red dot symbolises that the woman is married but now a days, it’s also worn as a fashion statement by unwed girls and women.
