How can I develop "Guitar Fingers" Rapidly?

Asked by Rickomg (259points) April 10th, 2009

I have been playing for 2hrs a night for two weeks, sometimes longer, and now I feel like my middle two digits have blisters on them. Very tender to the touch.

KEEP PRACTICING

Yeah Thanks! Not sure how much farther I can push them before I am doing Dammage rather than helping them develop the callouses I want. I can ignore the pain but is that really gonna help me or should I stop and wait to heal a little before I continue?

My daughter is a harpist, and when she has to play long sets she brushes some super glue onto her fingertips (she didn’t invent this; other harpists do it as well). It’s kind of like an artificial callous. It will let you play more comfortably until your natural callouses build. Be careful not to tough anything til it dries, of course

Play every chance you get. Nice to know there is another picker out there.

You want to develop callouses on your finger tips . Best thing to do i know this might sound strange but use a different gauge string , stock guitars come with .36 or .42 use strings that end in .50 gauge . You can also rub your fingers on a rough surface .

I have been playing alot, and my dasterdly digits are doing well now! feels weird like I have caps on the tips or something, it will take some getting used to but at least now I can really get in some really long practice sessions in! I have been doing nothing but chords for the last three weeks now and I think tonight I finally get to learn some songs to practice!! all this practice will finally pay off a bit! Thank you all for your help!

Maybe you shouldn’t spend so much time on chords., not all songs use standard chords and you may come across a song you cant play because you dedicated so long to chords. i have been playing guitar for many years my finger tips are smooth like a non guitar players .
Watch for guitarist warts !

No, I have to dissagree with you, I have no doubt that I will be able to play any song I want eventually. I just needed to get the basic chords down and be able to change fingerings rapidly. Still not great yet but definately getting better. I’m curious Why you think I would not be able to learn something different than chords? I can learn anything. It may take me a bit to get it down but I have the tenasiousness to get the job done. Hence, learning to play guitar at 40! I may be older but I’m not dead yet! LOL

Because i know alot of people like yourself, studies chords lots and when it comes to playing non standard chords or even metal/punk they cant do it . Age has nothing to do with it but what you dedicate your time to has instead of just doing chords you should do more . Chords are not the be all and end all of guitar you know 80% if not more of what you have just dedicated your time to will be forgotten and not needed .

Thank you all! My fingers are now like leather on the tips! LOL
My instructor has me working on bar chords now! Last week it was stretching accross 3 frets index to pinky. While playing Blackbird by the beatles! I love to pick! With out the pick. I find that it gives more control over the emphasis of the sound (strong or soft) I love Playing my guitar!
