How tall should an umbrella stand be?

Asked by srmorgan (6773points) April 12th, 2009

I made some large (9 inch diameter, 15 inches high) pottery cylinders and a colleague suggested that the design could be modified for use as an umbrella stand. Aside from the issue of knocking it over and keeping it from shattering, how high should the stand be?

I would think you’d need an interior depth of about 24 inches so the umbrellas stand up and don’t lean way over. It should have a good solid base so it doesn’t tip.

I have a Japanese ceramic umbrella stand and just measured it for you. It is a cylinder 9” OD 18.5 ” tall. There is a 5/8 ” hole about 1 inch from the bottom so it can drain. Contact me off line if you need a photo or more info. I can weigh it if that’s helpful.

Lupin reminds me that umbrella stands typically are cylindrical, not tapered, so the umbrellas are held upright and don’t flop out much wider than the top. It’s to hold them in, not display them like flowers in a vase.

The hole must be for evaporation, not drainage. You wouldn’t want the water to drain out onto the nice parquet floor of your vestibule, now, would you? I suppose it must be an inch high deliberately to avoid drainage.

I just weighed it – exactly 10 kg. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
That will tell you the wall are about 1/2 thick. The top flares out an imperceptible amount to prevent damage to the umbrellas.
I wonder if the hole is used for the manufacturing process. Drawing out a mold?

@srmorgan I sent you a picture of the stand. Let’s hope this stimulates our economy a bit.
