What is a good resource for learning how to make clothing yourself?

Asked by aeschylus (665points) April 14th, 2009

I’m looking for a good website that will describe how to make clothing from scratch. What do you grow/ raise and how do you best cultivate the plants/animals and extract the raw materials? How do you spin thread, make cloth, and then cut and bind it into shirts/pants/blankets etc.? I’m not talking knitting here; I mean real thorough knowledge about becoming completely self-sufficient.

It would also be cool to know how the finest clothing is made. For instance, how does one make a fine bespoke suit?

There is probably not one single site that will help you to learn from the very spin your own thread level. You must do a lot of research on your own, just as you will when you have accumulated the information you need. You will first search the raw material sites, such as cotton, silk, and wool, then the production sites, such as carding, spinning, and weaving. After that, the do-it-yourself fabric sites.

I have learned all the above crafts through years of practice, classes, and research. You can do it, but no one here can tell you how. It is strictly do it yourself, and hard work. Good Luck.

I don’t know about a website, but the best place to learn to make clothes is called “Grandma’s”.
